Your account security starts with knowing when someone is trying to trick you. Phishing is one of the most common types of online fraud — and users of digital financial platforms are frequent targets. In this article, we’ll walk you through how it works, what warning signs to look for, and how you can protect yourself starting today.
What is phishing?
Phishing is a type of fraud where bad actors impersonate a legitimate company or service — like Airtm — to trick you into doing something you shouldn’t: sharing your password, logging into a fake website, handing over a verification code, or sending funds.
The name comes from “fishing”: attackers cast a line and wait for someone to take the bait.
How do these attacks reach you?
The most common channel is email, but phishing can also arrive through:
- Text messages (SMS)
- WhatsApp or other messaging apps
- Paid search ads that mimic real websites
These messages are often designed to look nearly identical to real communications — complete with logos, colors, and signatures that resemble Airtm’s. That’s what makes them tricky to spot.
Red flags: how to recognize a fake email
Even as phishing attacks grow more sophisticated, they almost always share a few telltale signs:
- The message creates a sense of urgency Phrases like “You have 6 hours to respond or you’ll lose your prize” or “Your account will be suspended” are designed to make you act without thinking. Pressure tactics are a classic sign of fraud.
- The sender’s domain isn’t official Airtm only sends emails from @airtm.com or @airtm.io. If you receive a message from addresses like these, treat it as a red flag:
These domains are designed to look legitimate — but they have nothing to do with Airtm.
- It asks you to click an external link Fraudulent emails include buttons or links that redirect you to fake sites built to steal your login credentials. Always check the full URL before clicking anything.
- It requests sensitive information Airtm will never ask for your password, 2FA code, account balance, or any sensitive data via email.
- It contains spelling mistakes or awkward phrasing Many phishing emails originate from outside your region and include grammatical errors or sentences that feel off.
- You “won a prize” and need to follow steps to claim it If Airtm runs a giveaway and you’re a winner, the prize amount is credited to your account automatically. We will never send you an email asking for additional information to receive your reward.
What Airtm will NEVER do
To make it crystal clear, Airtm will never:
- Ask for your password or verification codes via email
- Request that you send funds to “verify” or “unlock” your account
- Offer support over phone calls, WhatsApp, or SMS
- Ask what your account balance is
- Ask you to fill out forms with sensitive information through external links
If anyone does any of the above in Airtm’s name — it’s a scam.
How to protect your account: a quick guide
These steps significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to phishing:
Always access Airtm through the official URL Type the address directly into your browser or use a saved bookmark:
Don’t use search engines to reach the login page Paid ads on Google or other search engines can redirect you to fake sites that look exactly like Airtm.
Verify the sender before doing anything Make sure the email comes from @airtm.com or @airtm.io. If the domain is different, don’t interact with it.
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) 2FA adds an extra layer of security to your account, protecting it even if someone gets hold of your password. You can turn it on in your account settings.
Never share your password or codes with anyone Not even with someone claiming to be from Airtm support. Our team will never ask for them.
Don’t save passwords on shared devices Use a personal device and, when possible, a password manager.
